A healthcare profession and/or lactation consultant is recommended if you are experiencing latching issues.  The nipple shield can help when the nipple is too large for the baby to fit into its mouth.  If you have not been referred to this product by a professional choose smaller sized nipple shields  for smaller mouthed or more premature babies.

Contact means that the nipple shield is cut in such a way so that the baby's nose touches the mother's breast which can help stimulate the baby and make it feel more like a normal nursing situation.
