SAME NIPPLE BUT BETTER THAN SOOTHIE
The Soothie pacifier is the standard pacifier given out by leading hospitals across the world.  The Gumdrop offers the same exact nipple with design improvements for how it fits around the baby's mouth.  For a comparison which demonstrates the superiority of the Gumdrop over the Soothie, click here.

PACIFIERS 101

Before we get started on shape, you should check out this great informational link on the pros and cons of pacifier use.

Which shape to choose?  The rounded Gumdrop or the orthodontic Natursutten?

The rounded shape of the GUMDROP tends to work better for breast-fed babies because the tongue is positioned under the nipple as it is during breast-feeding--helping prevent nipple confusion. It also strengthens nursing muscles.  About 80% of babies tend to move pacifiers around in their mouths. Because the tongue’s position never changes, European midwives recommend starting babies on rounded pacifiers.  This is the Gumdrop which is hospital grade and recommended by leading hospitals.  This one is special because it is cut out to fit neatly under the nose for maximum comfort and ease of use.

The orthodontic shape, seen in the Natursutten, however, is the most popular in the U.S. The tip of the nipple is slanted to encourage tongue movement against it (as opposed to under it), and the tongue’s pressure is directed towards the tip. The orthodontic shaped pacifier is often recommended by dentists and healthcare providers because it may prevent tongue thrust.

However, any significant advantage of one shape over another has not been demonstrated because neither shape tends to cause problems unless sucked intensely for years.  Babies have their own preference and it's important to choose a shape your baby enjoys. Try different shapes until you find the one your baby prefers.
