A healthcare profession and/or lactation consultant is recommended if you are experiencing latching issues.  The nipple shield can help when the nipple is too large for the baby to fit into its mouth.  If you have not been referred to this product by a professional choose smaller sized nipple shields  for smaller mouthed or more premature babies. 

The difference between this kind of nipple shield and a contact nipple shield is that the contact nipple shield is cut in such a way that it allows the baby to have its nose area on the mommy's breast.  The touch and smell of the mommy is important for a baby.  That said, many babies prefer the regular shield and many lactation consultants and other healthcare professionals will recommend the regular shield.  If you have any doubts, though, choose a contact nipple shield.
